Organisations from around the world are battling with coronavirus. I’ve been actively involved for about two weeks now in the UK #localgov sector. I asked colleagues for their views on what’s going well (pluses) and what we need to improve (deltas) based on the last two weeks worth of activity. Here’s what I found:

Plus

Vast improvements in collaboration – isn’t it funny how silos melt in a crisis (how do we replicate this in business as usual? – for another day)

MunicipalNinja

Comms – we’re getting the message out via radio, social media, websites, facebook live

  • Distributed leadership, flexibility and innovation
  • Key workers and available staff for redeployment identified
  • 90% + staff working remotely – great ICT kit and commitment from tech colleagues to enable to this
  • Great commitment from Councillors and Leaders
  • Great websites – providing residents with easy access to critical info
  • Kindness of strangers
  • Rapid adaptability
  • Homeworking is actually alright (with the right kit, culture and good broadband)!
  • The NHS, scientists, teachers, supermarket workers, delivery drivers are getting the recognition they deserve
  • Commitment from staff working around the clock with compassion in the face of ambiguity
  • Vast improvements in collaboration – isn’t it funny how silos melt in a crisis (how do we replicate this in business as usual? – for another day)
  • Families and networks are supporting key workers – enabling them to do their jobs
  • Speed of solution delivery has rocketed.
  • Our current and future leaders are shining bright – officers and members. Why does it take something as shit as this to show it?
  • WhatsApp is proving great for rapid and engaging comms with new virtual teams

Delta

  • Need to be more proactive with comms – need a 2 week plan – we’ve been swamped by reactive work
  • Need greater focus on org’s new Strategic Objectives
  • Need to start planning recovery
  • Fake news everywhere
  • Need more guidance on effective homeworking and employee welfare – especially mental health
  • Need more of a focus on supporting residents’ mental health
  • More empathy required – panic buyers are buying out of fear; civic leaders and politicians are doing their best; some people just don’t understand the risk yet
  • Need to improve coordination – within the org and with other agencies
  • We need to do more to help colleagues rapidly transition into redeployment roles and new ways of working
